about Laptoptailors - felt sleeves that fit

New iPhone 4

June 8th, 2010
Yesterday Steve Jobs has announced the arrival of the new iPhone 4. It is of course smarter, better etc. But the most important news for us is that it is flatter. That means that it could fall out of the 3G sleeve. So we've designed a special iPhone 4 sleeve for you, available here and now.
sleeve for iPad

Even though the iPad hasn't launched yet in the Netherlands, we have the perfect sleeves ready for you. So you don't need to worry about damaging the screen, or having to walk around with a boring standard sleeve. Some new colours too: lemon yellow, soft pink, chocolate and a lovely natural mixed grey (undyed).
Opening soon: Hub Shop Rotterdam

On October 1st, the Hub Shop Rotterdam will open its doors to the public. Of course, we at Supernana LaptopTailors are happy to share the initiative and have immediately secured ourselves a box. We'll be selling the small sleeves for iPod and iPhone there, as well as the matching neck straps.
The Hub Shop is a collaborative store, which caters to craftspeople, designers, inventors and food makers from all over the world, who devote their time to tangible ideas for a better world.
They facilitate sustainable entrepreneurs by renting them empty cube-like boxes under attractive conditions. Any product or service with a sustainable or social touch can be sold at The Hub Shop.
The Hub Shop is more than a retail shop; it aims to be a platform that really supports (small-scale) social and durable initiatives. Next to being a sales channel for these social entrepreneurs, it serves the public with an inspiring meeting place. The Hub Shop has an inspiring coffee corner in a relaxing environment in which to enjoy specialty Fair-trade coffee and delicious snacks.
New hangtags!

June 2009 They have come in - our new hangtags that will replace the large woven logo label. They're metal hangtags that we hang from the keyring. Much more civilized and modest (and very nice!)
MacCover is now LaptopTailors

We didn't mean to, but we were violating Apple brand rights with the name MacCover. They asked us quite friendly to stop doing that, and so we did. We chose the name Laptoptailors because we make sleeves for all laptops, not only macs, and because we make them all to fit exactly. Like tailors really. So that means new labels, new printed stuff and soon a lot of new pics on the site.
Press release: Clean & Unique signs at Fair Wear Foundation, Supernana MacCover to be chairman

Amsterdam, November 26th, 2008
The brand new association Clean & Unique has signed the Code of Labour Practices of the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) last Monday. Clean & Unique and FWF have started a unique pilot project to give small fashion businesses the opportunity to become a collective member of FWF, thus sharing the cost. Since this is a new form of membership for FWF, the terms of the agreement will be evaluated in one year.
Clean & Unique consists of seven participants: Eco Couture, Studio Jux, Merunisha Moonilal, Monkee, De Katoenfabriek, Van Markoviec and Supernana. They are all small companies, active in several segments of the fashion industry; high fashion, recycled saris, organic screenprinted T-shirts, outdoor fashion and children’s accessories. Clean & Unique is all about fair labour and the use of sustainable materials. Next to the members-only association, there is also a website where small fashion companies can take part in the community, discussions on the forum and be informed of informative meetings and lectures. Clean & Unique is also looking for new members to increase possibilities for sharing experiences and collective advantages.
With the signatures of FWF and the seven Clean & Unique members, a start has been made for a promising cooperation. The hope and expectation is that apart from FWF and Clean and Unique, the labourers in far-off production countries will benefit as well in the long run.

First edition This happened Utrecht a succes

Some time ago, I was asked by my friend Ianus Keller, of For Inspiration Only fame, to hold a short lecture about the design process of the Supernana Moo card holders for the first Dutch edition of This happened in Utrecht. Five hours after subscription was opened, all tickets had been sold out already! A nice geeky atmosphere, good other lectures to listen to and an interested audience, what more can a girl wish for? It was fun, anyway. This is what some others said:

All links on this successful evening can be found on delicious. For a chance to participate in the next This happened Utrecht, subscribe to their mailing list.
New Macbooks are out

October 14th, 21:12 GMT+1
They're out! The new MacBook 13", MacBook Pro 15" and MacBook Air. They all have slightly adapted dimensions from the old models of course, so your old sleeve won't fit any longer. But not to worry- we'll make the exact tight fiting sleeve for you! Just tell us you have one of the new Macs when ordering and we'll know what to do. In a few days, expect an update with the new Macs between the standard models.
That must have been the fastest product development ever!

A green sleeve for the XO

September 2008
The US based Studio Fibonacci asked us to design a sleeve for the OLPC
XO laptop to sell on their website XOExplosion.
One Laptop Per Child's mission statement is: To create educational opportunities for the world's poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning.)
XOExplosion sells XO accessories and gear. We had a lot of fun exploring different possibilities, and this is what we came up with - isn't it cute? We just love the handle that matches that of the computer!
Right now, we just made a small batch, but the rumour goes that Amazon will be selling the XO from the end of November.... If you need a great custom made sleeve for your XO, please order from XOExplosion
directly, but if you are interested in a wholesale order, you may contact us.

MacCover - A New Option for Protecting Your Mac Portables
Complete article here
by Chris Marsden on June 4th, 2008
There is another option for protecting your iPod or MacBook available. MacCover.com makes custom sleeves for all your Portable Mac accessories. You choose the color, and if you have an odd sized computer (older model or PC), they will even make a custom cover for you. Colors range from rather neutral to pretty bold.
(...)
Personally, a sleeve, is the way to go with a laptop. I have two different bags I carry regularly. One is a messenger, the other a backpack. Neither is a laptop bag, but with my sleeve, my ordinary bag becomes a laptop bag. I may have to keep these guys in mind for when I get my new computer.
press release: New MacCover site online!

June 2007
As of today, the new site www.MacCover.com is online.
MacCover has been selling felt sleeves for laptops since February 2007. The site has been completely redesigned with a more professional look. The product range has also been updated. Apart from selling laptop sleeves in several designs, customers can also get felt protection covers for their iPods, iPhones and other mobile phones and mp3 players, as well as a handy accessories bag for all messy cables, power adapters etc.
They all come with a key ring attached and are made in a heavy duty 3mm thick felt.
The covers are available in highly vibrant and more subdued colours. Standard issue is made for Apple/Mac, but all other sizes can be custom made within one week without surcharge.
Giftwrapping and shipping to anywhere in the world is included. Customers can pay by bank transfer or PayPal.
Moo card holders

May 2007 Something else we do: making felt card holders for Moo cards.
They are sold through Moo.com
Find some (happy) comments from customers in the links below:
torakiki:
"Just arrived the Moo mini cards! They’re gorgeous, Moo confirms its usual high quality standard plus fast international shipping. They love to print, I love their work. Also exquisite the felt card holder by Supernana."

equivocality.com:
"Supernana card holders are used to carry Moo Minicards so they don’t get damaged in a bag or pocket, and are made of 100% wool. There’s a drop-shaped hole in the centre for the thumb, but I found it very difficult to remove any cards this way. Even with only two cards in there, the finish is too slippery to get any kind of grip on them. Instead, it becomes a funny shaped window to show off your cards.
It’s better to take all the cards out when handing them out anyway, as people like to choose which one(s) they want to keep.
At first I had a hard time believing that 14 cards were going to fit in this little case, but sure enough, after gradually adding more and more, I had 14 of them in there at once. The case needs to be broken in. Occasionally, a corner of one card will get stuck on the fabric and get nicked, but other than that, it’s not too bad.
If being used for outside wear, I’d recommend clipping the holder onto a bag or coat with a carabiner. That way you can easily take it off if it rains or snows."

AFFORDABLE DESIGN
Over the past month I've come across some pretty cool items I thought were really well designed and affordable (always a nice combination).
1) MOO + SUPERNANA:
I had a box of ATHLETE business cards (and holiday cards) custom-printed by London-based Moo (which for anyone who is a die-hard Flickr user is probably familiar with) for about $20. To carry these mini cards, I picked up a custom card holder handmade by the ladies of Supernana -- a Belgium company that normally specializes in baby accessories -- for $7.

Supernana has introduced a new line of laptop cases, designed primarily for the MacBook and the MacBook Pro. MacCovers protect a laptop with felt a tenth of an inch thick, and feature no hard parts such as zippers, which could possibly damage a computer through scratches or impacts.
The magnet straps, meanwhile, use real leather, and the seams of the felt are double-stitched. Supernana's stock cases fit 13-, 15- and 17-inch MacBooks, and come in seven different colors including black, brown, pink and cream.
Should buyers have an unusual laptop, custom sizes can be made on request. The cost per case is 40 euro ($52) plus shipping to anywhere in the world.

My friend and fellow entrepreneur Philine van der Vegte has just launched an interesting new product: the MacCover. A natural felt cover for your Black or White MacBook in 7 cool colours. Get yours now at http://www.maccover.com

I just received the latest Supernana newsletter and it mentioned a very nice product to both protect, personalize and humanize your latest piece of slick white technology. Of course it can also protect a MacBook Pro, a Tablet PC or even one of those Dell laptops.

MacCover colours
With the thick felt cover it will protect your laptop against bumps and scratches. Also, it will keep it nice and warm.

The MacCover is made by the very nice Supernana. They create these and many other products locally, on a small scale with a dedicated, passionate group of women. Their other products are targeted at children, but with a quality that can last over many generations. I can't see my laptop withstand time over generations, but it will hold out longer than without one.
Order yours now, mention my name in the email and it might just earn me one of these amazing podcovers (nano nano)!

Make your MacBook touchable with felt MacCovers Posted by Simon Every time we think we've seen it all, a company comes out with a bag or other accessory that comes out of left field. This time, the surprise is in the form of the MacCover, a felt sleeve for your MacBook or MacBook Pro.
The company touts the benefits of felt: flame retardant, shock absorbing, resilient, and environmentally friendly, plus they offer the felt in seven colors, some of them quite vibrant. The 3mm-thick sleeves are made by hand in Belgium and also have quite a unique latching mechanism using a leather strap and magnet. The MacCover is available now for all Apple portables at a cost of 39.95.
